Slovak Roma activists' report to uncover UK "journalist abuse"

Head of the Slovak NGO Roma Press Agency covering the troubled minority announced on Sunday the Tuesday release of a report documenting the practices of Western journalists pushing an anti-EU integration agenda, allegedly abusing the poverty and lack of education of the Roma.

"Some journalists have abused the poverty and often the low education level of these people in order to follow their own political goals aimed against the unifying EU," Kristína Mangolenová said in an e-mail release. "What is well hidden under the cover of “humanity” is racism and one only goal: to force the British government to take measures which are allegedly necessary to protect the UK against the hordes of Roma migrants from Slovakia," the release added.

The report will be released on the Roma Press Agency website at www.rpa.sk.

The Roma Press Agency is a not for profit non-governmental organisation providing a Slovak language and limited English-language news coverage of Slovakia's Roma minority estimated to be several hundred thousand people strong. Large portions of the Roma community live in extreme poverty, often in isolated settlements.

The British press ran stories on recent Roma unrests, which followed announcements of cuts in welfare benefits. Some stories, particularly in tabloids, portrayed the Roma as an imminent threat of immigrant influx into Great Britan.
